There is a common misconception that once
people reach a certain age they lose the ability to learn. This simply is not true. Adults
can learn many things just as quickly as children. In fact, they can pick-up certain
things with greater ease than children.
Children learn pronunciation and comprehension faster than adults, but adults can learn to
speak in complete sentences faster than children. Adults can also conceptualize. It may
seem like children learn vocabulary quickly; however, in reality, they need words repeated
dozens of times before they really learn them. Adults also need repetition to learn,
unfortunately, they are usually not exposed to as much repetition as children are. A high
school or college class is usually only a few hours a week whereas children are exposed to
the repition of new words during every waking hour. This is why it is vital that the
participants repeat their cassettes many times, follow along in their pocket-size mini
manuals and complete the sections of the workbook.
